D1 for Automotive Lighting

  Introduction Xenon Light is the latest development in automotive Headlight applications offering optimum road safety and drivers comfort, Xenon Light using gas discharge technology composes of a discharge bulb, an electronic ballast with the introduction of the D1 bulb the electronic igniter is now integrated into the bulb offering a number of advantages.
The D1S,D1R are optically compatible with the current D2S and D2R bulbs.
D1S for projection headlights, D1R for reflection headlights.
They meet all the requirements of ECE R99 regulations.
A 3 pins AMP Quadro lock connector connect the D1 socket with the dedicated ballast Features & Benefits Reliability and Safety The Gas discharge bulb requires a high start voltage of 23 KV in present systems this high voltage is delivered to the bulb by a high voltage cable and a connector, in the D1bulb the high voltage is generated directly in the bulb base, this offers increased starting reliability without electrical losses along the cable and connector, has improved electrical safety. Electromagnetic interference EMI
The electromagnetic interference is better controlled by the deletion the high voltage cable and connector and by the compact construction, There are no high voltage contact points between the igniter and the bulb anymore. Ballast Specification
The D1 bulb needs a dedicated ballast with a well defined interface specification has been established by an European working group. The D1 bulb can be used in combination with any ballast complying to these specifications. An additional feature is that there is practically no limitation to the distance between the ballast and the D1 bulb .
The present system with high voltage cable and connector is limited in distance because of the electrical high voltage losses. The D1 bulb is therefore idea for applications where the ballast has to be remotely placed. System cost
Because of the deletion of the high voltage cable, connector, high voltage parts in the ballast and better control the EMI, the application of D1 bulb offers a reduction in the system cost. Market developThe benefits and features of the D1 bulb offer significant advantages for the car makers .It is therefore the expectation that the further development of Xenon Light will replace the present system and will lead to a rapid market growth in the years to come. Dimension and weightThe integration of the igniter into the bulb base saves the connector and cable and offers a more compact ballast design. The small 3 pin connector is mounted on the side of the D1 bulb, resulting in a short built in space.
